SCA
Nearly 30 years ago I was active in the SCA, not only as a fighter, but also in some other groups...one of which was the Cooks Guild of our Local Barony (Stargate) we would get together once a month for a feast that consisted of entrees made from ancient recipes that we had to actually translate from the old english into modern english, and then determine the quantities of everything (how much is "some"?)  One can come up with some very different results using the same basic recipe, as we discovered at one meeting at which a recipe for Flaune of Almayne was prepared by me and another member of our group.  Mine was like a bread pudding, whereas hers was more like a custard and they were quite different.  One of the things we would do was publish the recipe as we translated it in the barony newsletter to have published proof of our work (there were different levels in the guild once you'd published certain numbers of recipes...I published 3)  after a while the recipes were gathered together and put out is a  "Cooks' Guild Cookbook".
After a couple years We dropped out of the SCA....but a couple months back I started going to SCA events again.

.....flash foreward to last weekend.  On saturday night I was at the Autumn Melees & Crown Tourney ,,,some friends of mine and I were visiting different people they knew, and we stopped at this one guy's tent and he was serving up some foods he'd been making...one of which he told us was a Flaune of Almayne, which brought back the memory of my cooks guild days.  I told him the previously mentioned story and he looked at me with astonishment...and asked my SCA name (Fearghas MacRob)  which I told him...he burst out "I used your recipe!!!"  seems that he was given a copy of the cookbook by one of the other member of the cooks guild and enjoyed making the recipes in it.  He was wrong about it being my recipe...it was the other persons (much better than mine) ...But talk about life being stranger than fiction!!!

You might be suprised how many SCAdians you know! Hubby and I have been in the SCA lets see... he has been for 24 years and I have been for 14. I was even was a Kingdom Officer here in Ansteorra!

BTW... I'm Lady Magdalia Mac an Ghabbhan. Hubby is Lord Conal Lingus Mac an Ghabbhan (yes, his name was done with intentions of annoying the heralds). In fact, my Mother-in-law is Baroness Dana Mac an Ghabhann! And I can list the rest of the family but then it starts to read like the OP and that can get tedious. LOL

I'm not surprised that lots of the folks I know from the cons are members...what I'm surprised at is that many of the folks I knew back when I was first active are still around. I've decided that I am retired from fighting (although I did fairly well at the one fighter practice I went to back in July) and am concentrating on being a Bard (no surprise there is it?) Ghost of a Rose has competed in two bardic championships so far and although we didn't win (wasn't important to us) we got exposure and good responses from the audiences. We also played at the feast at Tourney by The Loch. The competition at Bordermarch Melees required that we do a song of Hearth and Home as the second round number...we didn't have one in our repertoir, so we talked and both were familiar with the song Home Again by blackmore's Night but hadn't done it, so I got the chords and lyrics the thursday night before the tourney, we both listened and practiced it on our own, then saturday morning we put it together. Unfortunately we didn't have time to memorize it...and by the time the second round came around it was getting too dark to read the lyrics, and we messed it up some :( I was told that if we hadn't messed it up we would have made the semifinals because the judge LOVED our arrangement and rendition of Scarborough Fair (not Simon and Garfunkel's but the original) That's what we get for trying to adhere to the requirements of the competition. LOL
